Korners Folly celebrates 125 years in 2005 - From
the Kernersville
News, 12/28/2004
Korners
Folly will be celebrating its 125th anniversary next year. Celebrations
will last throughout the year with four main events being held
in the months of April, June, October and December.
Korners Folly was founded on March 26, 1880. The celebration
had to be pushed back to April 2, because the actual founding
date, March 26, falls on Easter weekend in 2005. Certain events
will be invitation only but the community will always be welcome
to events on the grounds of Korners Folly and all events
happening around Kernersville. We are hoping to have as
much participation from the community as possible. We welcome
everyone that wants to come and help us celebrate Korners
Follys 125th anniversary, said Connie Martin, Korners
Folly director.
On April 2, a grand opening will be held at Korners
Folly. As of now, events include a ribbon cutting, a mayoral
speech, a cake competition, a childrens storybook parade,
puppet shows, and a costume ball. Also on April 2, a piece of
artwork will be unveiled but it has not been determined what
Korners Folly is going to do with it.
Korners Folly will be introducing both a commemorative
coin, a souvenir book, and the gift shop will have its grand
opening. The house will be open that day for tours at a low
price. An old fashioned ice cream social will be held on June
25, the second event of the celebration year. Period crafts
and local artists will be on hand at the Korners Folly.
Music, food and fun will accompany this event. A Walk
in Time is the planned event for October 15. The
community can participate in walks through the historic district
listening to the history of Kernersville and each historical
site along the way. Hayrides and period games will also be offered
throughout the day. A country Ho-Down is planned
for all to enjoy on the evening of the 15th. Saturday, Dec.3,
will be an invitation only Christmas Gala at the Korners
Folly for members, sponsors, contributors and volunteers. A
silent auction will be held and the house will be fully decorated
in Grand Victorian Style. Plans have been made but there are
still several additions to be made to the celebration lineups
and events on the four planned days so plans are subject to
change.
To make the anniversary year a success, Korners Folly
is going to need as many volunteers as possible. Next
year is going to be a lot of fun. Its going to have to
be a group effort by everyone in the community to make it a
success, said Martin. Korners Folly will be open
during its regular hours in 2005 except for the four event days
where they will have special hours. We are looking forward
to the community getting involved. We want to see everyone here
celebrating, Martin said.
